Tropical astrology chart
Western astrology is totally based on the orientation of the Earth to the Sun and uses the concept of “Tropical zodiac”. It is believed in western astrology that every year the Sun is at the first degree of Aries and Libra respectively at the spring and autumnal equinoxes, and at the first degree of Cancer and Capricorn at the summer and winter solstices. As a result of this popular belief, the tropical zodiac ignores the Precession of the Equinoxes which is an important astronomical event.
Hence, the term Astronomy covers astrology as well as the study of the nine planets. The Vedic astrology basically applies the same position of the planets that are used by the astronomers against the background of certain unchanging stellar lights or fixed stars which is called the “sidereal zodiac”. Each section is marked by three points one for sign, second for the planets and third for the house. In Vedic astrology on the other hand the shape of the birth chart is square, and it is divided into 12 sections. In western astrology, there is no birth chart. Let’s have a detailed look at the major differences between both of them. Apart from this basic difference Vedic and western astrology differs in many ways.
Astrology in west mostly deals with an individual's date of birth only. Indian astrology mostly deals with horoscope, which means, it is a form of prediction and analogy based on the construction of a horoscope for an exact moment, such as the time of a baby's birth, in which various planetary bodies are said to have an influence. Western astrology on the other hand is the system of astrological predictions most popular in western countries. Vedic astrology is a sacred science, which was revealed by the great saints of India, more than 5000 years ago and was encompassed from generation to generation giving solution to people’s distress, bad luck and problems. The earlier expression for Vedic astrology was simply “Jyotish Shastra (Jyotisam)” which means the science of the light.
